Preserving the past for the future
Enjoy the images here within. Let them transport you to the world of the 1910s and 1920s, when life was simpler and the postcard was the equivalent of a modern 'txt': a quick line to get a message through when the time was not available to write a full letter.
Ireland, like other countries, had its own postcard industry despite British rule, and the political undertones of some of the imagery used on postcards hints at the rumbling discontent of the ordinary Irish men and Irishwomen. Postcards, of course, played a role in communicating messages in code during the War of Independance, when post was probably regularly monitored.
For more information on this project, please see the 'About Us' link.
If you're anxious to see what images are here, by all means peruse the sections in the above links. Provenanced images (those which relate to a specific location) are organised by county. Other images are categorised as accurately as possible.
All feedback is greatly welcomed.
Keep checking back as new material will be added each week.
Enjoy and Beannacht Dé Leat.
